Lufthansa FAQs
Frequently asked questions about Lufthansa
Is Lufthansa a good airline?

Lufthansa is Germany's flag carrier and one of Europe's most respected airlines. It's a founding member of Star Alliance and is known for its reliability, punctuality, and solid onboard service. Lufthansa is currently rolling out its new Allegris cabin product across its long-haul fleet, with redesigned seats in every class. For travellers heading to Europe, it's a strong full-service option with meals, entertainment, and checked baggage included on long-haul fares.

Does Lufthansa fly direct from Australia?

Lufthansa doesn't operate its own aircraft on flights to or from Australia. Instead, through a joint venture with Singapore Airlines, you can book a seamless journey on lufthansa.com that connects through Singapore to Australian cities including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide. The European leg is flown on Lufthansa aircraft to their Frankfurt or Munich hubs, and the onward connection to Australia is operated by Singapore Airlines.

What baggage allowance does Lufthansa offer?

Baggage depends on your fare type. Economy Light fares don't include checked baggage — you'll need to pay to add a bag. Economy Classic and Flex fares include one checked bag up to 23kg on intercontinental flights. Business Class Classic and Flex fares include two bags at 32kg each, though the newer Business Light fare only includes one. First Class gets three bags at 32kg each. All passengers can bring one carry-on bag (8kg, max 55x40x23cm) plus a small personal item like a handbag or laptop bag.

Does Lufthansa include meals and entertainment?

Yes — on long-haul flights, all fares include complimentary meals and drinks, including wine, beer, and spirits. You'll also get a personal seatback screen with movies, TV shows, music, and games. Even Economy Light fares, which skip checked baggage, still include the full meal and entertainment service. Wi-Fi is available for purchase on most long-haul aircraft, with complimentary messaging included on all long-haul flights.

What classes does Lufthansa offer?

Lufthansa offers four cabin classes: Economy, Premium Economy, Business, and First. Premium Economy gives you a wider seat with more legroom and enhanced service. Business Class features lie-flat seats with direct aisle access on newer aircraft. First Class offers private suites — and with the new Allegris product, First Class Suite Plus provides a fully enclosed cabin with ceiling-high walls. First Class is only available on select routes and aircraft types.

What is the Lufthansa Group?

The Lufthansa Group is one of the world's largest airline groups, and it owns several airlines beyond Lufthansa itself — including SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings, Discover Airlines, and ITA Airways (Italy's flag carrier). This means you can often connect through Zurich, Vienna, Brussels, or Rome as alternatives to Frankfurt and Munich. When booking on lufthansa.com, you may see itineraries that mix Lufthansa and group airline flights for the best connections.

Can I earn frequent flyer points on Lufthansa?

Lufthansa's loyalty programme is Miles & More, the largest frequent flyer programme in Europe. Since Lufthansa is a Star Alliance member, you can also earn and redeem miles with partners like Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer, United MileagePlus, and Air New Zealand Airpoints. For Australian travellers, the Singapore Airlines partnership is particularly useful — you can credit Lufthansa flights to KrisFlyer and vice versa.

Do I have to connect through Germany when flying Lufthansa?

Frankfurt and Munich are Lufthansa's main hubs, so most long-haul itineraries will route through one of these cities. However, thanks to the Lufthansa Group's other airlines, you may also have the option of connecting through Zurich (SWISS), Vienna (Austrian), or Brussels (Brussels Airlines). If you're heading to Australia, the joint venture with Singapore Airlines means you'll typically connect through Singapore on the Asia-Pacific leg of the journey.

How do I find cheap Lufthansa flights?

Track Lufthansa fares on IWantThatFlight and set up fare alerts so you're notified when prices drop. Lufthansa runs sales throughout the year, particularly to European destinations. Being flexible with dates and considering Economy Light fares (which skip checked baggage) can save money. Also compare routing options — sometimes flying via Zurich on SWISS or via Singapore on a codeshare can be cheaper than a direct Frankfurt connection.
