The capital city of South Australia, Adelaide is the country's fifth largest city. Founded in 1836 as a capital of British province it was named after Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen, queen-consort to King William IV. It was designed by Colonel William Light to be grid-like with garden-circles and a formation of five central squares. This plan was exceedingly unpopular at first. But Light was able to push his plan through. The resulting Adelaide of today is famous for its easily navigable streets and ongoing tradition of intelligent city planning. Early in its conception secularism and civil liberties became prominent features of this progressive city now known as the “City of Churches.”

Perhaps Adelaide's most noticeable virtue is its distinctive layout. Known today as “Light's Vision,” the unique configuration of the city is a grid with government squares in the center and a ring of parks encompassing it. The benefits of Light's Vision today are clear; ubiquitous multi-lane roads forming a sensible grid with two sets of radiating ring-roads make travel unusually simple.

Adelaide is known for its many many festivals, cuisine, and long beach-fronts. These, alongside a thriving industrial sector, make the capital city an unusually secure place to live. Indeed, Adelaide has the distinction of being ranked among The Economist's top ten “World's Most Livable Cities” three years running. Its art scene exploded in the 1960's and 1970's with support from both major political parties. The famous Adelaide Festival of Arts and Fringe Festivals are hallmarks of Adelaide's jocular atmosphere. Many regular festivals sprouted from this tradition and the city has blossomed into a cultural mecca for the region.
