Darwin Travel Information
Named after evolutionary theorist and explorer Charles Darwin, the city of Darwin Australia lies at the centre of Australia's thinly-inhabited northern coast (the "top end" of the "land down under"). It is on the Timor Sea facing Indonesia and is capital of the Northern Territory. It has a population of 135,000. The significant Stuart Highway runs from Darwin, across the central desert, and to the coast of South Australia. As to climate, it has a tropical two-season pattern. There is the dry season with its pleasant sea breezes and warm weather. Then there is the wet season wherein gigantic monsoons strike accompanied by fantastic lightening displays which shoot across the sky. Cyclones are known to hit then, and the weather is even hotter than in the dry season.

Darwin was the target of dozens of Japanese air assaults during World War II, the first of which on Feb. 19, 1942 is known as the "Pearl Harbor of Australia." Airstrips, artillery stations, and bunkers are still to be seen in town. East Point Military Museum relates much of the military history, and the Australian Aviation Heritage Centre in Darwin has a B52 Bomber inside. The Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory houses aboriginal art, besides other works. This includes dot paintings, bark paintings, and carvings.
